JAMAICA

A Small Slice of Paradise

Despite being the third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica is recognized as the largest English-speaking island in the region. Located 90 miles south of Cuba and approximately 600 miles south of Florida, USA, Jamaica is surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Measuring 146 miles in length and 52 miles in width, Jamaica boasts six mountain ranges, 120 rivers, and a plethora of springs. Due to its abundant vegetation, stunning rivers, and breathtaking coastal seas, the island was historically referred to as Xaymaca, meaning “land of wood and water” by its indigenous inhabitants.

To understand the size of Jamaica, comparing it to other land masses can be helpful. Jamaica has a land area of approximately 10,991 square kilometers or 4,244 square miles.

This makes Jamaica slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut, which has a land area of 5,543 square miles, but significantly larger than the state of Rhode Island, which is 1,214 square miles.
